What the heck is fat binary?

Fat binary is a one man design shop. It is actually the portfolio of design work created by me, Craig Sween. I suppose that I could call it Craig Sween's Design Portfolio, but that doesn't sound nearly as fun as fat binary. Whatever you call it, fat binary is an outlet for my current endeavors as a freelance graphic designer.

Are you qualified to do this?

I assume by that you mean what kind of experience do I have. So far, this is what I know...

...In 1994, I received a BFA in graphic design from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.

...From 1995 - 2000, I worked as a art director/graphic designer for the advertising agency Hoffman York In Milwaukee. HY handles ad responsibilities for several national and regional clients.
At HY, I worked on tons of projects ranging from designing the agency's softball uniforms to art directing television spots for the Wisconsin Lottery. I have also handled the numerous responsibliities, such as photo direction and press-checks, that goes along with design projects. During my last year at HY, I started designing web sites for our clients.

...After getting a feel for web design, I decided to take a art director's job with the web development company Apex Interactive in Milwaukee. While I was there, I designed several e-commerce based inter- and intranet sites. I was with Apex for one year (2000 - 2001) when they, like so many dot coms, had to close their doors.

...after leaving Apex Interactive, I started receiving requests for freelance design work from various sources. In January of 2001, I became fat binary.

What can fat binary do for me?

I have worked on so many different types of projects. The majority of my design career focused on print design, but the last two years the focus has largely been digital based. Ideally, I would like to maintain a balance of print and digital.

Fat binary capabilities include design (and production) of:

print - ads, brochures, direct mail, point of purchase, and other promotional and branding based items.

web - graphics based sites (utilizing HTML, dHTML, and javascript) banner ads, user interface design.

logo - company identity, icons and specialty graphics

If a project has needs beyond my capabilities, such as flash or complex programming, I have a number of "associates" that are ready to help complete your project.

Questions about your upcoming project? Wondering if fat binary is the right man for the job? Please contact me and we can discuss.

What do you use to design all of this stuff?

Pretty much your standard equipment. Apple computer; Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Streamline; Macromedia Fireworks, Dreamweaver; Quark Express and a group of experimental monkeys I borrowed from a university research lab.
